Ingredients

  • 2 cups strong brewed coffee espresso or dark roast
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract optional
  • Whipped cream for topping optional
  • Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder for garnish optional

Instructions

  • Brew the Coffee: Prepare 2 cups of strong coffee and let it cool slightly.
  • Mix with Sugar: In a small saucepan, heat water and sugar over medium heat, stirring until fully dissolved. Remove from heat and mix into the brewed coffee.
  • Add Flavor (Optional): Stir in vanilla extract for extra depth of flavor.
  • Freeze the Mixture: Pour the coffee mixture into a shallow, freezer-safe container. Place it in the freezer.
  • Scrape the Granita: After 30-45 minutes, use a fork to scrape the frozen edges into crystals. Repeat every 30 minutes for about 3 hours until the entire mixture forms delicate ice flakes.
  • Serve and Enjoy: Scoop into a glass or bowl, top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings if desired, and enjoy immediately!

Notes

For stronger coffee flavour, use espresso or a dark roast for the best taste. Fork technique matters. Scraping at regular intervals creates delicate crystals instead of a solid ice block. Try adding a splash of Irish cream or a sprinkle of cinnamon for a unique twist.
