Method
Prepare the Espresso
- Pull a shot of espresso using an espresso machine or Moka pot. Freshly ground beans work best.
Heat the Milk
- Warm the milk over the stove or in the microwave until steaming but not boiling.
Froth the Milk
- If using flavored syrup, add it to the milk now. Use a milk frother to create a light, airy foam. If you don’t have a frother, a whisk works too.
Layer the Milk
- Pour the steamed milk into a glass, holding back the foam with a spoon. Then, add the foam on top of the steamed milk.
Add the Espresso
- Slowly pour the espresso over the milk and foam, creating distinct layers. If you prefer, drizzle flavored syrup over the top instead of stirring it into the milk.
Notes
For a flavored latte macchiato, add syrup to the milk before frothing or drizzle it on top. Using whole milk yields the best foam, but barista-style oat milk is a great dairy-free alternative.
